Watch what went down at Ireland's Red Bull Flugtag

This is what happens when 43 teams attempt to defy gravity with style in front of 65,000 people.

It had been 7 years since Ireland had it’s Red Bull Flugtag, and boy was it worth the wait. Teams from all over the country and even the world arrived in Dublin to show off their creativity, craftsmanship and craic. From a flying Luas tram to a crashing Bitcoin the variety of hilarity was second to none. See for yourself…

A huge thanks to all the teams who provided everyone with such entertainment. And congratulations to the three who placed on the podium, Pegasus 2.0 with their magnificently sized craft, The Luasers, from Spin 1038, for their hilarious depiction of the Dublin transport system. And finally, our champions The Pink Panther team, with their wonderful design of the movie classic, a routine as smooth as it’s theme song, and, of course, soaring the furthest with 12 metres.

Red Bull Flugtag goes sky high in Dún Laoghaire

Red Bull Flugtag goes sky high in Dún Laoghaire

The 65,000 who gathered at Dún Laoghaire Harbour were amazed by the courage, craftsmanship and craic the teams possessed as they charged into the fierce coastal gales only to plummet into the Irish waters- the spectators were blown away, (as were the teams, but in a more literal sense).

What a strong day for our amateur aviators, but we could only fit three on the podium. ‘Pegasus 2.0’ was rightfully awarded 3rd place with their spectacle of a craft. The Spin 1038 team, ‘The Luasers’, took silver with their representation of the Luas tram line, shown brilliantly through their design and original track that sampled the instantly recognisable “DONG DONG”. But the champions were The Pink Panther team from Co. Kildare with their wonderful display of the movie classic, a routine as smooth as it’s theme song, and, of course, soaring the furthest with 12 metres. Although there can only be one winner, huge thanks have to go to all 43 teams who came from all over Ireland and the world to provide such entertainment for everyone who came.

Such glorious performances were met with huge admiration from the crowd. Thousands were cheering, gasping (and Icelandic clapping), filling Dun Laoghaire Harbour with an immense atmosphere. With people from all walks of life cheering on the bonkers and the brave, everyone’s fun day out was shared on the social wall on the big screen, kudos everyone for the great posts! Amongst the crowd were our judges, Red Bull athletes Joe Canning, Ashling Thompson, Greg Callaghan, Andrew Cotton, Irish footballer Stephanie Roche and TV presenter Jenny Buckley, who joined everyone else in loving the team-themed displays.

Whether you missed out or want to reminisce, we’ve captured some great photos of the flights, crashes and crowds (See if you can spot yourself!) and we have some cool videos to show you too. So stay tuned on the website and relive the awesome day that landed on the Irish shores.

Music to Fly: The Official Red Bull Flugtag Playlist

With Red Bull Flugtag landing in Dublin, Dún Laoghaire on May 20th, it is only fitting to hit you with a playlist that will inspire you to take flight.

Sugar Ray – ‘Fly’

If you want to ever fly, you have to really want it. Want it as bad as Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray or whatever he was singing about in this song.

Foo Fighters – ‘Learn To Fly’

Now comes the hardest part: Learning to fly. It takes patience, dedication, hard work. Are you ready?

Nicki Minaj – ‘Fly’

Okay. You believe you can fly. You want to fly. And you have learned to fly. Now you are flying! With Nicki Minja and Rihanna!

Nelly Furtado – ‘I’m Like A Bird’

And now you have gotten so good at flying you think you are a bird. But do not fly too far away or you will get lost…

Kenny Loggins – ‘Highway To The Danger Zone’

Uh oh, you have flown too far. Now you are in the danger zone. Be careful, please! (But at least now we know you are a top gun.)

U2 – ‘Elevation’

You have returned from the danger zone. You are safe. You are enjoying the elevation, soaring up above the sun, just make sure you don’t get vertigo…

Frank Sinatra – ‘Come Fly With Me’

Flying alone is fun. But it is more fun to fly with others. Call your friends. And get out there.

Now you’re in the flying mood, we’ll see you at Dun Laoghaire Pier, midday May 20th!

Red Bull Flugtag Returns to Ireland!

Thursday 15. February 2018

Red Bull Flugtag Returns to Ireland!

Calling Ireland’s amateur aviators! This is an invitation from Red Bull Flugtag to anyone who is innovative (and bonkers) enough to defy gravity in front of 100,000 people this Spring…

Red Bull Flugtag is an international event where teams will have to construct, display, and launch a self-made flying contraption off a 9-metre high ramp above water. The competition is marked by three criteria: distance, the creativity of the craft and showmanship.

A quick lesson on flying… Step 1, build an aircraft with wings that will, hopefully, catch some air (a.k.a. lift!). Step 2, with a run-up, launch the aircraft from the pier (aka. thrust!). Add a final splash of Red Bull in the mix and there you have it… the physics of flying, plane and simple!

But that’s not all… a true Flugtag champion soars in style! We’ve all seen a regular plane in the sky *yawn* but what about a flying unicorn? Or a flying packet of digestives? The world is yours to command captain and we want YOU in the cockpit!

If you are interested in participating, applications open 21st February and click here for more details. For any of you sensible enough to believe in gravity, support your flying friends online with the Flugtag conversation and join them for a day of fun at Dún Laoghaire Pier on Sunday, 20th May!

The sky’s the limit!

Let your imagination take flight.
